The Mask, the Human, and the Animal: Diverse and Striking Cultural Approaches
An animal-faced mask on a human can be as simple and playful as a child at play, or as vital as a ritual meant to preserve the balance of the world. It can reflect a belief in the equivalence of all living beings—or a transgression of social norms. It all depends on the context. It all depends on the humans who take hold of it. From Asia, where the monkey becomes god and king, to our megacities where animal roleplay flirts with BDSM, and through the myths of First Nations, this roundtable is a celebration of diversity and discovery.
